wordplay: Orangepeelmoses.com Inspirational speakers always say that the world’s most successful individuals write their goals down. Santi White might’ve taken that principle one step further when she included the word “gold” in her recording alias. Even in an industry of dwindling sales, Santi’s still got a legitimate shot at plaque-worthy figures, thanks to compelling pipes, solid songwriting and cross-genre appeal. If her controversial friend and closest sonic relative M.I.A. is capable of wrangling her way onto mainstream playlists, the odds are obviously favoring the oddballs these days. They share two of the same producers (Diplo and Switch), after all. Just because you haven’t heard the name Santogold before, doesn’t mean you’ve been impervious to her melodic meat hooks either. White has been ghost writing for other artists for years now, but just put out her first solo release recently. Buzz has spread like wildfire since. Her Mile High Club debut at The Gothic last night saw her decked in a purple romper, spandex leggings and a lavender newsboy cap. Backup dancers/hype girls were clad in black safari pants, white V-neck tees and old school sunglasses. They delivered a mixture of original choreography, relative stillness, African dance and tambourine playing with deadpan facial expressions. The overall effect was perpetually entertaining. Even White’s touring DJ was fun to watch, often getting jiggy between mixes and even clapping along. Her shallow catalogue and powerful wail could have probably held their own even minus the bells and whistles, though. Such is the mark of a true artiste.
