wordplay: Samantha Donen
When I listen to the band Xiren (pronounced seer-rin), I think of a “big” wine: full flavoured and mature. The music bursts with hints and layers, from jazz to funk, soul and rock, that just pop out, the more you listen to it. The song, “Everything”, envelops my senses with deft songwriting sensibilities, not unlike Sting or U2. A good wine, let’s say a blend in this instance, requires the best grapes of its region…and Xiren’s sextet is stocked with nothing short of the most refined musicians the Denver/ Boulder area has to offer, like drummer Brian McRae (Freddy Jones Band) and keyboardist Benjamin Jansen (Opie Gone Bad), to name a few. The slick production of this five song demo surpasses most local talent and quite possibly raises the bar for Denver musicians to strive for.
July 27th @ Millennium Harvest House (Boulder)
