CD Report Card: Julia & the Unexpecteds
By Image Mag Staff @ 3:00 PM :: 313 Views :: 0 Comments :: Music: Reviews

wordplay: Cassandra Hood

Somebody broke Julia Brochey's heart and left her wallowing in puddles of tears and misery. Filled with despair and heartache, Julia laments about the pain of loss and loneliness. Her sultry voice, properly backed her overly talented band, The Unexpecteds, moans and undulates through her ups and downs.

Taking a wild journey through each stage of grief, Julia tests the boundaries of gypsy folk, with each song giving off a different ere. Ranging from reggae to pop country, the Unexpecteds employ slide guitars, trumpets, violins, drums, and a bass to soulfully back Julia's seductive vocals. No one element overpowers the other, and their blend makes each track unique and exciting. Occasionally, Julia's strength shines through her vulnerability, but mostly the songs soften even the hardest, most unemotional person, forcing them to recollect their own painful times of loss.  It's Julia's turn to break some hearts with her delicate, doleful music.
