With the mere opening of a restaurant, “snacking” has been stolen from the couch dwelling TV addicts and delivered to the palates of the culturally aware and socially active.
A charming reprieve from the rigors of the day, Amuse by Michel provides a low-key, yet sensational atmosphere at a price that nearly defies logic. The term: “affordable elegance” loses its oxymoronic value in this case with Amuse items ranging from $4 per selection to $7 for entrées; it is a value seldom seen in an environment that welcomes the casual diner, while at the same time beckoning those with a more formal temperament.
The Amuse selections feature a dazzling array of glamorous treats that perfectly compliment the impressive wine list. The Medjool Dates stuffed with Gruyere cheese and wrapped in smoked bacon, and the Potato Gnocchi with Pesto Cream Sauce are two notable items, the former making a particular impression. The sweetness of the date fights vigorously with the salty bacon, but before a victory can be declared, the cheese fills the mouth with a delicate sensation that helps push the bacon’s flavor over the top to taste bud supremacy. If there is a more worthwhile project that could be developed for the advancement of date/bacon relations, it could take years to discover.
Garden appetizers are normally a standard precursor to rich dinners, so why not indulge in something a bit more refined than mere salad? The Arugala with Roasted Mushrooms, Haystack Goat Cheese and Piquillo Peppers offers a flavorful way out for any who care for an alternative to tradition.
What if one is in the mood for Surf and Turf? Or just surf? Or perhaps plainly turf? Or how about half surf, with a taste of turf, but just a little bit. . . No matter what one is in the mood for, be it from the ocean or from the farm, there is plenty to select from and just as much to enjoy. The Calamarata with Maple-leaf Duck Leg Confit, believe it or not, is the perfect companion for the Prince Edward Island Mussels with a saffron mustard cream sauce and, with plenty of insight from the knowledgeable staff, it is a cinch finding the perfect wine to accompany. With a full range of imported cheeses and a list of delicacies (categorized in such a way as to make it as painless even for the epicurean-challenged), Amuse by Michel adds more than just a bit of marvel to your evening.
