Text messaging has literally revolutionized flirting, giving lovers the ability to communicate at any hour of the day regardless of physical location. Additionally, the slightly impersonal nature of the medium affords some the courage to divulge thoughts and perversions that they might never divulge without it. And while I wouldn’t trade these advances for all the pussy on the planet, inflection is occasionally lost in the process. Things like sarcasm and intent don’t always translate. For Better, a new play about the pluses and perils of virtual relationships, is laugh out loud hysterical. All the actors are armed with some combination of laptops, cell phones and palm pilots, and the actual stage is covered with platforms of various heights (almost like scaffolding). The story centers around a couple who has supposedly fallen in love, having only interacted once or twice in the flesh. FedEx ends up delivering the engagement ring. As you can probably imagine, the premise is ripe for hilarity of all stripes. Written by Eric Coble and directed by Chip Walton, For Better is a bona fide homerun, and not the steroid-fueled kind either.
