The immeasurable authenticity of Brandi Carlile's self-titled debut Brandi Carlile illustrates a minimalist song for song's sake approach to songwriting, leaving the rural Washington native as one of the most palpable and genuine singer-songwriters on the scene today.
Carlile, along with songwriting partners and bandmates Tim and Phil Hanseroth, weave fresh and invocative melodies and harmonies with strong, passionate, introspective lyrics brimming with a southern twang and vulnerable emotion. "Closer to You," a track that combines all aforementioned qualities, fuses the alt-country influence of Jeff Buckley or Ryan Adams with a Sheryl Crow vernacular.
"Follow," "Throw it All Away," and "Fall Apart Again" showcase the Rosanne Cash and Bonnie Raitt influenced melodies as well as Carlile's pipes and "Happy" and "Someday Never Comes" collects a comforting Lennon/McCartney familiarity bringing to mind the confessional phrasing of Abbey Road.
Brandi Carlile boasts an unadorned simplicity. "Songs don’t need to be so heavy handed," Carlile says. "A good song begins with a simple guitar and vocals."
Brandi Carlile appears with The Fray at the Universal Lending Pavilion on June 24th and solo at the Boulder's Fox Theatre on June 25th.
