THE SNUG

In the old days, where did priests go to get their daily whiskey baptism, noblemen to have a pint without having to rub elbows with those of a lower stature? They’d slip away into a snug of course. Little rooms built for privacy in a ‘public’ house where you could get your drinks through a little opening to the bar, in private. This St. Patty’s Day weekend, The Irish Snug invites you to rise from your snug and be more ‘social’ with their “4th Annual Capitol Hill Hooley!” The Irish Snug is making sure it’s worth the effort with live music (including the Colorado Irish Pipe Band), Irish dancing (The Reed School of Irish Dance) and plenty to drink in their 5,000 sq ft tent. The Snug is also wheeling out a special menu of classics like corned beef and cabbage, Shepherd’s Pie and more. With three days of festivities and only a $5 cover to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation, there’s no reason to stay in your snug… unless, of course, that’s your thing.

NALLEN'S
When it comes to all things Eire here in the Mile High City, one name comes to mind--John Nallen. And so Nallen’s (the place) stands as a pinnacle part of the ‘Emerald isle’ here in Denver. With tradition a way of life here and a fantastic pub smell (seriously, I love the smell of a good pub, not to be mistaken for the smell of stale beer, oh no), Nallen’s is a great place to go and grab a quick pint any day of the week, so using an old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Yes there’ll be a small tent, pipers and Irish dancers this year, but if every other St. Patty’s is any indication, expect Nallen’s to be jumping from wall to wall. In spirit of this “no frills, big thrills” St. Patty’s Day, Nallen’s will keep the food simple and traditional, adding to Nallen’s ability to feel like your ‘local’, where a mug hangs behind the bar just for you. All this, and no green beer in sight, makes Nallen’s a great stop on your clumsy pub-crawl or your one stop for the whole weekend.

SCRUFFY MURPHY'S
As I watch the digital countdown (located behind the bar at Scruffy’s) wind its way towards St. Patty’s, it’s obvious this particular day is important to them. Scruffy Murphy’s has a traditional philosophy when it comes to Irish pubs, “it’s all about the music”. When better to put it into action than St. Patty’s? All weekend long, the staff at Scruffy’s wants to make sure you get your fix with a tent full of activities including a ton of live music, grub such as Irish stew and beer troughs! If it’s a little ‘nippy’ out this St. Patty’s, don’t worry Scruffy’s has got you covered with heated floors in their tent (and all this with no cover!). Now I know we’re getting the raw end of the deal this year, what with the official holiday landing on a Monday and all, but Scruffy’s feels your pain and wants to make up for it by offering free lunch to those who purchase booze on green day.
