Vocalists often develop diva complexes. While Skye Edwards, singer on the first four Morcheeba records, was essential in establishing the band’s signature palette, founding brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey eventually found them selves tip toeing on eggshells.
“It was great to have sold millions of records and toured the world but we were nervously exhausted and our working relationships deteriorated very quickly.”
And so the Godfrey Bros. did their best Donald Trump impersonation and quietly passed Edwards the pink slip. Unwisely recruiting another single singer for the follow-up Antidote, the siblings finally had an epiphany of sorts.
“We no longer wanted to share any power with a permanent singer.”
Dive Deep, the Godfreys’ sea change (pun intended), is the first Morcheeba platter to feature a true ensemble cast. Some pipes are more pleasing than others, though. Singer Judie Tzuke gels well, landing lead on the aquatic-themed album’s kickoff single “Enjoy the Ride.” “Run Honey Run”, apparently a fairly obscure John Martyn cover, is Deep’s low point, its Mariana Trench IMO, thanks to some cringe-inducing lyrical clichés. Otherwise, the belly of the whale was kind to the music.
Dive into Deep.
