I was looking forward to the release of Balance 013 almost as much as Senior Prom. Unlike Prom Night, however, this mix actually delivers. The newest addition to the acclaimed Balance series is the biggest yet, with 56 hot tracks packed into an epic 3-disc set.
SOS (aka Sex on Substance) brings together the suave styling of Desyn Masiello, his Sexonwax label partner Omid 16B, and co-conspirator Demi. Individually these three have already achieved more than most DJ/Producers could ever hope for; together they epitomize the current state of electronic dance music.
From start to finish, this set is pure aural bliss. Disc 1 begins on a mellow note with an easy guitar riff, getting sensual but never rough with the listener. There is a decidedly organic vibe as elements of electronica, house, broken beats, downtempo, and even a little experimental and dub sounds are worked together. Disc 2 continues the journey but adds some attitude to the mix. Housey and deep, the sounds are melodic but definitely take a turn into the darker realm. Disc 3 is the more “club-oriented” leg of the journey, with edgier beats and dirty synths. Things get more techy and progressive but the momentum stays strong. The vibe has a bit more raw energy than the previous two discs, but doesn’t lose any of the melodic goodness that has tied the set together over the three mixes.
Balance 013 is a must for electronic music connoisseurs who like their beats mature and sophisticated. How would I describe this set? Good? No. Great. Top Shelf. Not only is it hard to classify which genre this set would fall in, words simply wouldn’t do it justice. I could say it’s cutting edge. I could say it’s hypnotizing. But it’s like trying to describe colors to a blind man. It’s something you’d need to experience for yourself to truly understand.
