Snowmass is the mother of all mountain concert series. And this year is no different, but Image Magazine wanted to step in and give you a push in the right direction, in case your summer mountain days are limited to a few select weekends up on Fanny Hill.

July 1st Blind Boys of Alabama. These Gospel Hall of Famers (Elected in 2002) have been on a steady touring circuit for decades. They have also claimed a widespread appeal as the reigning Gospel Grammy Award Winners since 2002. Though Gospel and Soul is their forte, they are not too proud or shy to splice some of today's (and yesteryears) hits in there. Don’t be surprised to hear funked-up covers or Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Tom Waits or even Gnarls Barkley.

July 8th Particle & The Mutaytor: Particle, a Southern California-based jam band, is more approachable than others in the jam genre, so don't be scared away by what you fear will be a crowd of twirling hippies yelling "Jerry!" Particle lends themselves to more of the electronic side of sounds, so keep an eye out for keyboardist Steve Molitz, who orchestrates and operates as both metronome and conductor as he guides the band through diving crescendos and crashing breakdowns. He routinely plays until his fingers bleed as his fellow band mates keep their marathon sets fueled on high octane.  Co-headliner The Mutaytor are a circus all their own, literally speaking. Part Parliament-Funkadelic, part Cirque du Soleil, they are a hair-raising human theme park ride with musical accompaniment.  Audience participation is mandatory and expected…so watch out!

July 13th Average White Band: How could you not go see this band… if not only for the bass line and horn fills of everyone's favorite 70'santhem, "Pick Up the Pieces." Three decades of funk, soul, rhythm, and blues bring the urban to the mountains. AWB are a rock and roll almanac all their own. Let your soul glow and get your funk out!

August 3rd Soulive: If you've seen Soulive before, you know you won't stop moving. Shaking your moneymaker is not a possibility or a probability, it’s mandatory. Born out of the site of the festival to end all festivals, Woodstock, NY, they bring their own set of acid, cool, bop, progressive, jazz arrangements with a contemporary edge to Aspen. These are the same compositions that wowed them at Monterey Jazz Fest and Bonnaroo. Also the same orchestrations that earned the band tour slots with the Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band.

August 17th Sonya Kitchell: And here's a chance to see a Grammy winner in the making. Sonya Kitchell, at 17 years old, is an old soul in a young body. She wears her creditability as humbly as her preternatural musical depth and breadth allows her. She possesses a musical scope well beyond her years; a scope that encompasses and embodies many of her heroes, from Carole King to Joni Mitchell, from Susan Tedeschi to Shawn Colvin.

August 19th Nickel Creek: Here’s one that was stolen from Telluride! A show announced as a surprise of the season.  This progressive and experimental acoustic bluegrass act is pure entertainment for any fan of music. As far as bluegrass goes, they're not from Kentucky so you don't have to be either. This Grammy Award winning California trio is coming off one of their most successful years yet and their shows are musical encyclopedias which incorporate the echoes of indie rock, punk rock, and classic rock all against the backdrop of contemporary bluegrass.

To cap it all off, Labor Day Weekend, September 1-4, 2006 is the mother of all mountain festivals:  Jazz Aspen Snowmass.  With apologies to the bluegrass folks at Telluride, this festival offers a wider range of musical interests with alumni including Widespread Panic, Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson and Sheryl Crow. With the preceding summer concert series a tough act to follow, you can expect those at Jazz Aspen to cap in off with some serious musicians coming into the fold for this year's wild summer-ending weekend in the peaks.
