Indeed, the hula hoop has just celebrated its golden anniversary. But these aren’t our parents' hoops anymore. To call it just a hula hoop is a gross understatement. Though Wham-O may have laid the foundation for the ultimate hooping craze, to burners, hippies, hipsters, and dancers, these hoops are so much more. They are spheres swirled with glitter and florescence, glow-in-the-dark apparitions, and portals of fire. And today, on the second annual World Hoop Day, these classic, colorful hoops are donated across the globe to supply underprivileged children with the basic but essential pleasure of a smile, a reason to play, a reminder that, circumstances aside, they are still indeed children.
Visit WorldHoopDay.com to make your tax deductible hoop donations and to view a full schedule of worldwide events, including Boulder’s own Kaivalya Hoop Dancers and Hoop It Forward at Cheesman Park Pavilion from noon to 9pm, giving away 150 hoops.
