Temperamental is the best word to describe the infamous vocal stylings and stage persona of Fiona Apple. So it was with no less drama, that the release of Extraordinary Machine came to fruition in October ‘05. After Apple’s self-produced version was dropped like a hot plate from Sony in early ‘05, producer Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent) and Epic Records took on the kitten with claws to re-produce the otherwise drab studio tracks. The long-awaited release of Extraordinary Machine delivers the goods, with 12 slick tracks that capitalize on young Apple’s
inner conflicts and feisty resolutions with a Tim Burton-like musical polish. The discordant melodies and choice instrumentations--horns, strings, and piano--embrace Apple’s vibrant vocals right from the get-go on title track “Extraordinary Machine.” Songs like “Tymps” and “Get Him Back” host beats and eclectic samples that clearly have Elizondo’s signature. While deft pop sensibilities shine on Apple’s dreamy musings of “O’ Sailor.”
