Halloween season is upon us. The one time a year it’s perfectly acceptable for girls to shed their inhibitions, don a boa and go wild. But for a few Denverites, it’s just another Friday night.
Meet Kitty and Michelle, founders of Denver’s top burlesque troop, Oh la la. After meeting five and a half years ago in New Orleans, these ladies brought the art of burlesque to Denver. By combining a variety of styles and types of music and adding hip hop and other dances to their act, they’ve created a unique style of burlesque. It’s become performance art with elements of theatrical production mixed in. Kitty describes it as a “live feed movie.”
The girls debuted their troupe in July of 2001 with only 5 performers, but word quickly spread and now they boast a membership of 20-30 girls. The success of their burlesque got them thinking, “What about the men?” They started the first BOY-lesque in April of this year and the ladies of Denver couldn’t be happier. This Halloween, Kitty and Michelle decided to combine the two troupes to produce a bigger, better Boy and Girl integrated burlesque show. Normally, the teams perform at Three Kings Tavern, but for these special shows they’ll be at the Roxy on October 25th and 27th.
Both Michelle and Kitty encourage anyone who’s interested to audition for Ooh la la. Try-outs are normally held every six months, with the next auditions happening in January. Ooh la la also performs for charities and special events, so if you have the occasion to give them a call, they’d be happy to speak with you. More information can be obtained by e-mailing the girls at oohlalapresents@yahoo.com.
So when you’re making Halloween party plans, don’t forget to include a stop at Three Kings Tavern or the Roxy. These girls AND boys will be very happy to see you!
