Mile High Clubbin’: Spa Treatment

After hours clubs are often cursed by an attached stigma.  They get a bad rap.  If Miami is a sunny place for shady people, then after hours are often shady places for, you guessed it...shady peeps.  Frequently, their sketchy reputations are well deserved.  Many AH interior designers seemingly go out of their way to cater to the crack head crowd.  Grimey concrete floors, leaky pipes, skanky furniture, etc.  Contrariwise, when Kostas (Global Dance/DC10) and his business partner Mahesh began conceptualizing their brand new AH venue venture, consensus said the whole concept was in drastic need of a dramatic facelift.  In search of the perfect handle, they settled on one that would seem the antithesis of after hours culture: Spa.  And while all the pampering and therapy that normally accompanies its namesake—acupuncture, aromatherapy, biofeedback, chakra balancing, color therapy, Feng Shui, microdermabrasion, Pilates, Reiki, yoga, etc.–isn’t necessarily present (although you just may score the occasional massage, if you’re lucky), the Spa treatment is still much more than a welcome change of pace.

Mahesh and Kostas first met in Vegas years ago.  What happened in Vegas apparently didn’t stay there, though.  As they had mutual friends in the “terrestrial” Mile High Club that is Denver, their friendship developed.  When now-defunct Moscow Underground went under–pun intended–they witnessed a window of opportunity open up.  Kostas already had sh!+ tons of experience in the after hours department, as the former owner of Amsterdam, and Mahesh was certainly no stranger to facilitating the wee hours either, as the successful promoter of a number of one-off events over the years including I Love Techno (with Detroit’s Matthew Dear), Metropolis, Reanimated, Robotek, Technical Tactics and Winter Wonderland, among others.  Fortunately, both immediately dug the club’s existing layout and neither demolition nor remodeling was necessary.  A paint job, some custom furniture, two BassFace systems, some lights, paintings by local artist Jay Paul Apodaca (JayPaulApodaca.com), a fountain, a bird bath and a couple of plants assisted immensely in the realization of their shared vision, though.

Luring patrons to the establishment was the next step.  By partnering with other promoters like Kevin Larson Presents to provide the “official after hours venue” for significant events like Larson’s long-running Victorian Fetish Ball, Spa has been able to quickly and efficiently tap into established niches, racking up guaranteed attendance along the way.  If last call always comes too early for you and your crew, you’re in for a treat.

 Everyone deserves the Spa treatment.

That looks really nice. I love the plush setup covered in red light. Cozy as hell I bet. However, I dont really get it. Do they servce alcohol? Are they getting around the Denver blue laws somehow? If not, is it a bring your own kinda thing? I mean, a bunch of adults aren't just standing around looking at eachother drinking cokes are they?
